Man in hospital after fight outside bar
An argument over a hat turned violent, police said last Wednesday, with one man being flown to Enloe Medical Center with head injuries and a suspect in custody.
The confrontation at Granzella's began in the early evening hours, Williams Police Sgt. Ed Anderson said. Marco Antonio Gutierrez-Padilla of Los Banos was inside with a group of friends wearing a 49ers hat when he was approached by Jesus Camarena, 21, of Williams. Police said they argued about the hat.
About two hours later, Camarena left the bar, and Gutierrez-Padilla followed, Anderson said. The two exchanged punches in the bar's parking lot, and Gutierrez-Padilla hit Camarena with a glass beer mug on the back of his head, then fled, according to Anderson.
Williams police officers, who arrived in the parking lot at 10:08 p.m., found Camarena bleeding from his head and severely injured ear, Anderson said. Camarena spoke briefly to the officers, then was life-flighted to Enloe in Chico.
Police officers tracked down Gutierrez-Padilla at the hotel in which he was staying. His hands were bloodied, and it was apparent he'd been in a fight, Anderson said. Police brought Gutierrez-Padilla back to Granzella's, where witnesses identified him, accordingto Anderson, and he was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, felony battery and mayhem. He was booked into Colusa County Jail.
"Even though fighting in public is against the law, when someone uses a weapon, that usually makes them the more substantial aggressor," Anderson said. "I went to the hospital today, and (Camarena) was still pretty groggy. I was told he needed extensive suturing."
Gutierrez-Padilla is 20, further complicating the investigation, Anderson said.
"We believe the 20-year-old was drinking beer," Anderson said. "We believe that he was served inside the bar."
