Sweet sensation: Chocolate festival raises money for charities
Fifteen years ago, Donna Critchfield attended an out-of-town chocolate festival and decided Colusa needed one of its own. So began the St. Stephen's Episcopal Church's Annual Chocolate Festival, which occurs during the first Sunday of December.
This past Sunday, a decade and a half later, Colusa residents were still getting their chocolate fix. For $7.50, attendees got to choose five single servings of chocolate from a huge variety of desserts.
Knowing that all of the proceeds would go to charities made the truffles, German chocolate cake and English toffee all that much sweeter.
"Last year, we made $5,000 and it all went back into the community," said Sharon Zwald, who took over as the event's chairwoman four years ago. "Attendance is a little slower this year because it is Thanksgiving weekend."
What money the fundraiser does make will be donated to charitable groups including A Hand Up, The Christian Association Fund, Impact for Life, and a local Christmas Basket Program.
