Christmas Tyme in Colusa is just around the corner
Window decorations are going up. Tractors are getting holiday makeovers. Portable LED displays are up and warning motorists that Colusa's main thoroughfare will be closed to traffic this Friday.
And if that fails to give it away, a banner advertising the event is stretched across the wall in front of Colusa City Fire Department.
Sure, Thanksgiving leftovers may still be fresh enough to eat, but there is no doubt about it: Christmas Tyme has arrived in Colusa.
By Friday, all Market Street businesses who are participating in the Colusa Chamber of Commerce's window decorating competition will have their storefronts festively adorned to reflect this year's Christmas Tyme theme — Santa's Toyland Village — which was submitted by Mary Lou Kittle. Lining the sides of Market Street will be 56 vendors.
The Decorate Your Tractor contest, which at one point looked as if it might be canceled due to insufficient participation, now has five participants.
Superior Tire, Colusa Lions Club, the Presbyterian Church, Maxwell FFA and the Colusa Veterans of Foreign Wars will all be vying for first place.
The veterans group may have gained an early advantage by announcing its intentions for any potential winnings they receive, which will be put toward erecting a Colusa County Veterans Memorial Wall planned for installation at Memorial Park on 10th Street. The veterans will have a donation jar at the tractor location for contributions from the community.
Helping to make the decision on Friday will be special guest judge and state Assemblyman Dan Logue. Liz and Clay Dawley will be the other two judges for the contest.
There will be a Christmas Tree Raffle, in which five decorated evergreens will be given away as part of the festivities. One free raffle ticket will be provided per family, but people are encouraged to bring one canned food item in exchange for a raffle ticket.
Strolling musicians will make their way through up and down the street to provide Christmas tunes. Other ongoing activities featured at Christmas Tyme will be a petting zoo, pony rides, face painting, kids crafts, craft and food vendors.
