Support expansion of mosquito district
The mosquitoes are upon us again. It is very important that the abatement district gain control of these insects. Malaria has always been a disease they have checked for and now they are dealing with the West Nile virus.
Come this August the residents of Arbuckle, Grimes, Maxwell, Princeton, Williams and the other unincorporated areas of the eastern part of the county will have an opportunity to vote to join the Colusa Mosquito Abatement District. There will be an additional tax added to their property taxes that will enable the Colusa district to acquire more equipment, materials and employees to service the expanded area.
The Colusa district will celebrate 50 years of service this year. They have worked hard to improve the abatement program. Each employee is state-certified to handle the abatement program. Plus, they work as a team. Instead of just purchasing new equipment, they go to farm shows and look closely at the new ideas in abatement equipment. They then come back to Colusa and build it themselves. They are on a tight budget and these dedicated workers save the taxpayers dollars.
This has to be done now. If it is voted down, it will only cost more in years to come. I urge the people of the proposed new expanded district to vote YES. Enjoy life without mosquitoes and very possibly save a life that could be lost to the West Nile virus.
