Colusa advances, stopped by Orland
Doubles has been the strength of the Colusa High girls tennis team all season and it saved the RedHawks from a first-round upset by visiting Wheatland on Tuesday in Colusa.
The Pirates top three singles players won their matches but the RedHawks won two of the three in doubles to advance 5-4 in the Northern Section Division II playoffs.
Colusa's top team of Coral Imhoff and Taylor Davies remained unbeaten in doubles on the season with a 6-1, 6-2 victory.
"I think it's the chemistry between each partner, it's like we both kind of equal out our weaknesses," Davies said. "Coral is great at ground strokes and being there and getting there, and I'm great at the net."
All three RedHawks doubles teams are built with that balance in mind and the players' close friendships made it a special year for Colusa as the team claimed its first league title since 2005.
"It's been the best year in any sport that I've played," Davies said. "I love my team, I love my coaches and sometimes tennis can be frustrating but at the end of the day it's incredible."
The RedHawks No. 3 team of Ashley Roman and Kodie Solis, fresh off a surprising fourth-place run in the SVL tournament, won 6-1, 6-1.
Roman and Solis won their singles matches by the identical 6-0, 6-1 scores.
The RedHawks won both regular season matches 7-2 but Wheatland's exchange student from Spain, Laura Ferrero, had her best day against Colusa with a victory in her singles match and teamed up with Nadda Dakkak to win the No. 2 doubles match.
Wheatland finished second int he BVL and Morgane Rioval, Alyssa Kreditor and Ferrero won their singles matches to set up best of three doubles slate.
Rioval, an exchange student from Savoie, France, stayed unbeaten on the season with a 7-6(7-4), 6-0 victory against Imhoff, the SVL singles champion.
Kreditor picked up a 6-1, 6-4 victory against Davies and Ferrero beat Cheyenne Laux 6-2, 0-6, 7-5.
Orland 5, Colusa 1
The Orland High tennis team neutralized Colusa's doubles dominance the best they they knew how on Wednesday - they didn't play them.
Imhoff bested Orland ace Raquel Ontiveroz 6-4, 6-2, but it was the only win the RedHawks could muster in singles play, and there were no doubles matches held since Orland wrapped up the Division II champioship with their five singles wins.
The RedHawks were very close to forcing the need for doubles and even splitting the singles matches, as Roman lost in a tiebreaker to Alyssa Mattoon, 6-2, 4-6, 6-7 (3-7); Solis lost to Karandeep Kaur, 6-3, 3-6, 3-6; and Ann Kallisuch lost a tiebreaker to Alma Lopez, 2-6, 6-7 (1-7).
