Lady Honkers hand Yellowjackets 3-1 defeat
The Willows and Williams high school girls soccer teams went at it in Willows on Monday, with the result a 3-1 win for the Lady Honkers.
It was the second game of the year for the Willows squad, while the Lady Yellowjackets were making their season debut.
The Willows offense kept the pressure on the entire game, taking 11 shots in the first half and taking a 1-0 lead when Lynette Perez took a shot from a tough angle and landed it inside the far corner.
The pressure on the offensive end impressed Willows coach Bud Ramirez. "I changed the whole lineup, and changing things seemed to help us get more offensive. It's about time we started pushing up because we have the bodies to push."
Perez netted her second goal of the game in the second half with a right-footed shot into the top of the goal, but the 2-0 lead was cut in half when Williams' Sheila Sandoval capitalized on a penalty kick and buried it into the left corner.
Sophomore Karina Perez was in goal for the Lady Honkers, and stopped everything else that came her way. She was playing in place of Jennifer Chappell, who still found a way to stay busy around the net.
Late in the game Chappell rifled a shot down the middle that caught just enough of the bottom of the crossbar to bound straight down and over the goalline for an insurance goal.
"Jennifer hurt her finger," Ramirez explained of why she wasn't in goal. "I don't know, maybe I'll have to keep her out there."
The Honkers evened up their record at 1-1, while Williams fell to 0-1.
Both team are off until Dec. 10.
