Orland High wins Academic Decathlon
The near decade-long reign of William Finch Charter School as Glenn County Academic Decathlon champions came to an end Saturday.
Although Finch's Johnathan Bostrom was the individual high point winner in Saturday's competition, it was not enough to propel his team to victory for the ninth straight year.
Instead it was Orland High School's Academic Decathlon team that scored the victory on their own turf, winning first place with a combined score of 29,624 points.
Willows High went home with second place with 26,081 points, followed by Williams Finch with 25,941 points and Hamilton High with 23,855 points.
The 2014 Academic Decathlon was sponsored by Glenn County Office of Education at Orland High School. A total of 44 students competed.
Each team member from the four high schools competed in 33 grueling events, including tests in art, economics, language and literature, mathematics, music, science and social science.
In addition, the contestants performed both prepared and impromptu speeches, wrote essays on a given topic related to the theme of World War I and were interviewed by a panel of judges.
The final event — Super Quiz Relay — was opened to the public and was well attended by family and friends.
The Academic Decathlon would not have been possible without the help of the volunteers from the County Office of Education and the local area who served as judges and proctors, GCOE officials said Monday.
Organizations and businesses that sponsored the event included the Hamilton City Lions Club, Orland Women's Improvement Club, Mid-Valley Veterinary Hospital, Willows attorney J. Mark Atlas, Lambda Iota Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, Complete Family Dentistry and St. Monica's Young Ladies Institute.
The Orland Academic Decathlon team will now compete in the California Academic Decathlon State Final, March 20-23 in Sacramento.
The nine-member team will compete against teams from across the state.
The California team that wins the state competition will compete in the United States Academic Decathlon.
