Crash kills Vina resident
A Hamilton City fire engine enroute to a collision in Butte County crashed into a pickup on Monday, killing its driver, a 65-year-old George Akers, of Vina, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Hamilton City Firefighter Mario Medrano, 27, was traveling eastbound on Highway 32, west of River Road, around 1:45 p.m. with his lights and sirens on when for an unknown reason, Akers, driving a 1985 Ford Ranger, turned directly into his path, possibly to avoid hitting a vehicle that was attempting to pull over and stop, the CHP said.
The man was freed from the mangled truck and was rushed to Enloe Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries, the CHP said.
The 1991 F600 fire engine received moderate damage to its right front, and was taken out of commission.
Medrano, who was uninjured, was transported to Enloe Medical Center as a precaution, the CHP said.
Highway 32 was reduced to one-way traffic until about 4:10 p.m.
Technicians from the Interagency Hazardous Material Team and Cal Trans also responded to the crash to clean debris from the roadway.
