Honkers stop Bears, go undefeated in SVL
With only the Pierce High basketball team standing between them and an undefeated run in the Sacramento Valley League, the Honkers took care of business in a hurry at home Feb. 19, running out to a 34-19 halftime lead and coasting to a 63-48 win on Senior Night at Willows High.
It was junior Travis Mendes setting the pace for the Honkers (12-0 SVL, 15-9) with a team-high 19 points, 11 of which came in the second quarter.
Mendes was a constant threat with the ball in his hands, both when he was penetrating for close looks inside, putting up mid-range jumpers or even connecting for a 3-pointer.
Both teams played an up-tempo style of offense, but Willows was also able to force eight turnovers, and the height advantage of 6-5 Mendes and 6-5 Caroyl Smith limited Pierce from many second-chance scoring opportunities.
Pierce pulled down 19 rebounds total.
Jake Voorhees' 20 points and the outside marksmanship of Ricky Jauraqui kept the Bears without shouting distance, with Jauraqui nailing down a pair of treys and Voorhees also having a pair of long-distance call answered.
Beginning the second half with a 15-point lead, the Honkers were able to empty their bench for much of the third and fourth quarters, with 10 different players shooting their way into the scoring column.
Jake Martin and Adrian Plata both made nine-point contributions, with Smith backing them up with eight points and freshmen Luis Garcia tacking on five.
Saul Mendez finished with seven points for the Bears, with Jauraqui and Joe Howard each adding six.
