Janet Lovelace Allen

On February 22, 2008, Janet Lovelace Allen, 86 of Sutter Creek passed away quietly at home, surrounded by her family.
Janet was born in Maxwell, Cali, on May 30, 1921 to William Hayden Lovelace and his wife Edna Avis Cain.
Janet graduate from the University of California, Berkeley in 1994 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics. She taught Home Economics for Sutter Creek School District in 1944. Janet was first married to George E. Allen, 2nd Lieutenant U.S. Army. Killed in action in France in 1944. She then joined the U.S. Marine Corps Women’s Reserve, traveling 48 States by train ad part of her duties. She was honorably discharge in 1946.
Janet married John B. Allen, Sr., on Dec.. 1, 1946, and joined him in his ranching and various other businesses. She taught her six children to be honest, hard working, dependable, perseverant, and tough.
Janet served from 1958 to 1960 on the Citizen’s advisory Commission, appointed by the California Legislature to investigate the decline of the public school system. She retained a lifelong interest in trying to improve the quality of education, which led to her decision to found the Mother Lode Academy. This was a private college-preparatory school for grades 1-12. Janet served as administrator, principal and teacher at the Academy for over ten years. She also ran for the office of California Superintendent of Schools, coming in third, while only spending $200 in campaign funds.
Janet was active in the Queen Esther Chapter of the Eastern Star and served as Worthy Matron in 1952. She was Deputy Grand Matron for District #24 in 1974, and then joined John in his travels throughout the state during his time as Worthy Grand Patron in 1978. Janet was instrumental in establishing the Jobs Daughters Bethel #274 for Amador County. In 1958, Janet served as president of the Amador County chapter of the Cowbelles. She was also a member of the Ursula Parlor#1 of the Native Daughters, and a past member of the AAUW.
Janet’s main interest was her family. Her other interests include cooking, sewing, gardening, and especially, reading. Janet was a voracious reader and enjoyed a wide variety of literature.
Janet is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, John, her brother William Lovelace of Colusa, and her six children and their spouses, all of Sutter Creek: George and Judy, John Jr. and Corinne, William and Ethel, Robert and Linda, Joel Stephanie, Janet and Bruce Davis. Janet is also survived by 14 grandchildren: George and Evan Allen, John III and wife Liz, Adam and Brian Allen, Andrea and husband Jason Kreps, Luke, Dias and Stuart Allen, Vera Allen and Michael Schoening, Julianne and Jared Allen, Bill and Jessica Davis.
Her sisters Nell Estell and Kay Prater, and grandsons Jeremy Dean Brown and John Sinclair Davis preceded Janet in death.
Private family services were held on February 27. A celebration of life service for family and friends will be held at The American Legion on Saturday, March 15, 2008 form noon to 4 p.m.
