Sports Brief: Gross and Modesto College have record day
Gross and Modesto College have record day
Ron Gross, Colusa High School alumnus and coach, and the Modesto College Pirates football team opened up Conference play Saturday afternoon with the greatest offensive performance in the 92-year history of the program.
Gross, who is the offensive line coach for Modesto, and the Pirates, rewrote their record book with their 76-32 win over previously unbeaten and ranked College of the Sequoias. They set school records for most points in a game (76), total yards (738), first downs (45), and total plays (108). Modesto's 425 rushing yards were just 20 yards short of another school record.
Gross has had 16 players earn All-Conference Honors and five players named All-State, including three years in a row, in his eight years coaching at Modesto.
Currently, Modesto is ranked No. 1 in the state in first downs, fifth in scoring and total yards and sixth in rushing offense. Modesto's offense is annually ranked as one of the top offenses in the state. Last year, Modesto finished third in the state in scoring, averaging 42 points per game.
Gross coached football, basketball and softball at Colusa. He also serves as the head golf coach and is an instructor at Modesto College.
