I’ve never been all that lucky, but I feel lucky in life

Super Bowl Sunday is past. I have to admit I’m not into football. I didn’t watch the game until the last quarter and then only to see the outcome of it all. I found I kind of got hooked though when the game got a little exciting, and New York pulled it out in the end.

Everyone likes to win, so I’m sure the Patriots aren’t feeling so great about now.

I’ve never been all that lucky. Every now and again I’ll get a run of luck and win at raffles, but overall, I don’t usually win the big prizes.

I do feel lucky in life though. I think that counts more than winning games or winning awards or winning prizes.

We each have to find our own path, our own passion as we move through this world. When we do find it, we need to take hold and work toward keeping it.

I love the fact that people will read the words that I write. They may not always agree with me, but at least they read them. That is the key.

For a lot of years I worked in offices. It isn’t that I didn’t enjoy the work, or enjoy the people who surrounded me. I did. However, when I found that I had a knack for writing, it became a career. I know longer had a ‘job’. I found that when I went on vacation, I was actually ready to come back to work. That is the difference.

I have a number of friends who are involved in many groups, organizations and in business. Each of these people is working toward success, but in the midst of it all, they are happy in what they do. That is how it should be.

On occasion, I have spoken to students about career choices. The first thing I tell each class is to find his or her passion. Once they have found that, the rest of their

life will be far more enjoyable.

Some years ago we went on a trip to Oregon. In one of its larger cities there seemed to be a great number of young people living on the street. The parks were full of these young people just lounging around, with nowhere to go or nothing to do. They would panhandle on the streets. I overheard a group discussing, the best places to beg. I couldn’t help but think that they would be far better off if they put that much effort into education and job hunting as they did in begging. I just don’t get it.

My parents always taught me to work for what I needed. We need to remember how to work and not expect that anything is going to be given to us. We’ll all be better for it.

Just a thought…..
