High schoolers saddle up in Cottonwood
The cowboys and cowgirls from District 1 were in action again over the weekend, taking part in the second California High School Rodeo Association rodeo in Cottonwood.
Cara Hencratt (Red Bluff) roped one of the two first-place finishes among tri-county participants, taking the top sot in breakaway roping with a time of 6.57 seconds. She added a second-place in pole bending at 44.53 and a sixth-place showing in cutting (133 points).
Bailey Bean (Gerber) was also the top goat tying, wrapping up first place in 18.68 seconds. To this she added a fifth-place performance in cutting (135), was ninth in pole bending (46.87) and 10th in breakaway (4.36/1).
Girls also placing in the top 10 in their events were:
Michell Woolbert (Gerber) - Barrels, 36.85 (3rd); poles, 44.82 (3rd) and breakaway, 38.12 (7th).
Chelsey Bushnell (Red Bluff) - Team roping (with Brody Gill, Millville), 18.37 (2nd); cutting, 138 (3rd); breakaway, 12.65 (4th); barrels, 36.88 (4th); poles, 46.57 (8th) and goats, 27.00 (8th).
Among the cowboys is was Chase Alvernaz (Williams) tying with Gill in cutting, with 143 points. He was also half of the fifth-place duo in team roping (with Caitlin Campbell, Klamath Falls, Ore.), in 41.45.
Riding or roping their way to finishes among the top 10 were:
Wyatt Brown (Red Bluff) - Cutting, 140 (3rd); steer wrestling, 25.52 (3rd) and team roping (with Cameron Jones, Cottonwood), 41.45 (6th).
Wyatt Spencer (Corning) - Tie-down roping, 32.30 (6th).
Mason Meadows (Red Bluff, with Cameron Jones, Cottonwood), 62.03 (7th).
