It’s still OK to say ‘Redskins’

In response to Donna Krause’s request (“Mascot change earns thumbs up,” April 28 Appeal-Democrat) that the local papers refrain from using the term “Redskin”:

You have succeeded in removing a tradition that you clearly will never understand.

There are larger issues that you were elected to take care of. Whether you like it or not, these kids in this school are still Redskins. Don’t take that away from the last couple of classes that will graduate as Redskins. There, I said it: Redskins, Redskins, Redskins.

You can hide behind political correctness all you want, but you won’t remove my First Amendment right. Let the process that you put in place run its course for better or worse. There are a lot of people who disagree with your decision to remove this mascot, but we are forced to deal with the inevitable. So I am asking you to do the same until the name is changed. Maybe you can run for City Council and remove the Indian headdress from our seal as well, and while we are removing things that offend us, when is your seat up for election?

Mr. Ponciano, Like I've heard before, it was all about the money. The school needs to get that darn wreck of stadium finished and they don't have any money. The casino has loads of dough, so give in to the indians, change the name, and presto a new stadium. Does anyone really believe that respect and/or political correctness has anything to do with it? The whole process and resulting decision was a snow job and a sell out for dirty money.
