Letter: CHS spending priorities need adjustment
I recently received a letter from Colusa High School soliciting a donation to subscribe to an online study tool. Apparently, they do not have the $1,198 needed for the annual subscription.
I agree that we should take all steps necessary to improve the education provided to our children. I am, however, a bit confused by the priorities of our school district’s budget, and that it would compel teachers to have to fundraise in order to adequately equip their classrooms. This request for financial aid is coming off the heels of the district’s announcement that they are prepared to spend $60,000 over the next few years in order to change the school’s mascot.
Please don’t misunderstand my point. I am not against any reasonable improvement to any school, nor am I against fundraising for extra income if it is needed. My family and I have a long history of donating time and money to the school district, but in this case I have to question the district’s priorities. I myself believe that our mascot is not nearly as offensive as inadequate tools or pay for our teachers.
