Police seek man who followed, raped woman
Glenn County sheriff's detectives are seeking the public's help identifying a man who followed a woman for nearly 30 miles from Colusa into Glenn County before he assaulted and raped her on a rural dead-end road.
The assault occurred July 26 and was reported to the authorities on Aug. 7, Glenn County Undersheriff Richard Warren said Thursday.
To protect the investigation, the Sheriff's Department declined to say why the incident was not reported earlier.
"These types of sexual assaults involving strangers are very uncommon," Warren said on Thursday. "The majority of sexual assaults usually involve acquaintances."
The victim, a 45-year-old woman, told deputies a man began following her from the Rite Aid drug store parking lot in the 1000 block of Bridge Street in Colusa during the early evening hours of July 26.
The woman tried to get away from the man by driving on remote roads between Colusa and Glenn counties.
It was not clear whether she had access to a cellphone during the pursuit.
Eventually, the chase ended at a remote dead-end road near Bayliss in Glenn County, the Sheriff's Department said.
"When the victim was unable to drive any (farther), the suspect got out of his vehicle, hit and grabbed the victim, then sexually assaulted her," the Sheriff's Department said in a statement. "The suspect then got back into his vehicle and left."
Investigators said the woman had never seen the man or his vehicle before that day.
Warren said the Sheriff's Department urges anyone who feels he or she is being followed to take all precautions and notify authorities as soon as possible.
