Premier Mushroom wins award
Premier Mushroom of Colusa was named the Sustainability Innovator of the Year at the Innovate North State Innovation Awards held in Chico.
Premier CEO John Ashbaugh accepted the award and invited the farm's sustainability coordinator Kevin Foley to join him on stage.
Foley, a Chico State graduate hired to spearhead the company's sustainability efforts shortly after Premier Mushroom's program began in 2010, has played a major role in the sustainability progress at the farm.
"More than anything, I think it is just nice to have it recognized really. At the same time, its not really a destination. Sustainability is an ongoing journey. it's a nice milestone, but we've got a long way to go. We've got good role models in Sierra Nevada who is kind of leading the way, and we're trying to keep up with them," Foley said.
Since Foley was hired, Premier has taken a number of initiatives on sustainability. The first came in the form of an integrated recycling program, which reduced the annual waste-to-landfill weight by 80,000 pounds in 2012.
