Just a thought

I’m finding it hard to come up with a topic for today’s column. Things are great with me. My daughters have been visiting for the past few days. Later this week I’ll go to Portland, Ore., to attend my son’s college graduation.

I feel great, business is good and my personal life couldn’t be better. Nothing to report, and nothing to complain about I guess.

It is certainly OK to have a good week though.

I feel blessed to have been surrounded by family and friends this week. I experienced a few days when I needed a little help and without question, I got the attention and care that I needed.

I just have to be thankful for my children and for my friends.

We can always appreciate those around us and the people who care about us. I know that I am one lucky woman.

As I write it is St. Patrick’s Day. It isn’t that I have a lot of Irish blood, or that I have any claim to being able to celebrate the holiday. But, I do love corned beef and cabbage. I’m hoping there might be a little of the tasty dish in my future sometime this week.

I didn’t used to like corned beef. It is funny how our tastes evolve as we grow older. I guess we just have to come to appreciate some things.

I remember my dad eating canned corned beef when I was a kid. It never seemed very appealing to me.

Later, as I began to cook I started to experiment with preparing the real thing. I have to say that I can cook a pretty good brisket.

I learned a lot about cooking when I lived in North Dakota. For one thing I learned almost everything taste better if there is fresh cream involved. It probably isn’t very good for you, but it sure tastes great.

As we grow and mature, our taste in most things continues to change. I watched a television show last week about women who in some people’s opinions needed a change. One son said his mother needed to change her wardrobe. Apparently she was still wearing clothes she wore 20 years ago. The comment was, just because the clothes still fit don’t mean they are still in style or that you should keep wearing them.

It was kind of funny to watch as this woman pulled one dated thing after another out of her closet to model it. Good for her that she is still the same size after 20 years though.

We change. We all grow. Our taste is food, clothing and even furniture continues to move forward, and sometime move backward.

I love the way things from the 50’s and 60’s are now popular and called retro. I guess putting a new label on old stuff just makes it more acceptable.

Just a thought….
