Football players: Look both ways

It is very exciting to see so many kids playing youth football this fall, but I am very worried that they are going to get hurt.

Not on the field – but while crossing Fremont Street getting to practice.

I have seen a number of the young football players dart out from in between cars and run across Fremont to get to the fields behind Egling Middle School. I have watched cars slam on their brakes to avoid hitting them.

What is shocking is how many parents are standing right there and seem oblivious to the whole situation, and more than a couple have followed the example set by their children and ran out into traffic as well.

While I acknowledge it is up to drivers to be extra careful when children are present, they and their parents share part of that responsibility too. They need to cross at corners at the very least.

I also remind everyone that as we get later into the fall, the sun sets earlier, and makes it all the more difficult for motorists heading west to see.

Let’s all be safe out there, and go Cowboys!
