Diaz volleys to next level of play
Pierce High senior Mariah Diaz will continue her volleyball career next year at Feather River College in Quincy.
The 6-foot-2 middle blocker was an All-Sacramento Valley League selection and earned third team All-Northern Section honors.
Diaz ranked third in the Northern Section with 127 blocks, averaging 1.8 blocks per game for Pierce, which went 22-16 and lost to eventual champion Los Molinos in the semifinals of the Division V playoffs.
During the 13th annual North vs. South All-Star game on Dec. 8 in Willows, Diaz proved herself against some of the top players in the Northern Section, racking up nine kills and eight blocks.
The team she is joining is one of the elite community college volleyball teams in northern California.
The Golden Eagles went 22-9 this season and won the Golden Valley conference before losing in five sets to Fresno City college in the second round of the state playoffs.
Feather River finished the season ranked 10th in the final California Community College Women's Volleyball Coaches Association rankings.
"Mariah will be an immediate impact player for us and give us the net presence that we are looking for," head coach Sarah Richie said in a press release. "We are very excited that Mariah has chosen FRC as the place to continue her volleyball career. We expect great things from her this upcoming season."
