'Jackets hound Bulldogs in opener
With the halftime score reading 38-0 in favor of the Yellowjackets, the numbers on the scoreboard suddenly became insignificant on the second-half kickoff.
After the Bulldogs kicked off and the tackle was made, Los Molinos High's Ramon Pena remained on his back after trying to make the tackle. After being tended to by emergency personnel for 10 minutes on the field, Pena was strapped to a backboard and taken to the hospital by ambulance.
Los Molinos coach Jamie Henderson said after the game the Pena was to be examined for a possible neck injury, but that he had movement in his extremities as he was taken off the field.
Once the game resumed Williams tacked on six points in each quarter for a 56-0 opening-night win.
"We had a slow start and got the jitters out of the way," said Williams assistant coach Armando Bautista. "We came out with scripted plays we wanted to run to get rid of the jitters."
Once the Williams offense settled in, they began lighting the scoreboard behind an impressive performance by their young offensive line.
Damian Garcia scored on runs of 3 and 16 yards, Freddy Cervantes broke off a 38-yard TD run, Fabian Ruvalcaba scored on a 16-yard carry and Joaquin Carrasco found the end zone from 2 yards out for the halftime lead, as the 'Jackets converted three conversion runs..
Carrasco scored again from 2 yards out in the third quarter, Garcia ran in a 3-yarder, and Cervantes capped the scoring with a 29-yarder in the fourth quarter.
"They're young and coming together really well," Cervantes said of his offensive line, "our job is to read the blocks the best we can."
Bautista added, "(The offensive line) wasn't content just to block at the line of scrimmage, they also blocked well downfield. Damian Garcia made some great downfield blocks."
Williams' defense also kept the Bulldogs on a short leash, allowing just one first down - that on a 10-yard bull run by Justin Rogers in the fourth quarter - and taking the ball away on interceptions by Damian Garcia and Ruvalcaba and a fumble recovered by Alexis Ramos.
Los Molinos' Eric Haley intercepted a pass inside the Bulldogs' 5-yard line to squelch the Yellowjackets' opening drive.
Williams (1-0) hosts Maxwell on Friday, while Los Molinos (0-1) is off before returning to the field Sept. 13 to host Weed.
