Humor falls flat in 'Women In Trouble'

"Women In Trouble" follows a day in the life of 10 different females, united by their uncanny ability to look fabulous in their underwear while in the throes of emotional crisis. Imagine Russ Meyer directing a Lifetime movie and you get an inkling of the film's high camp, though that still might not prepare you for a full 90-minute session with writer-director Sebastian Gutierrez's Victoria's Secret School of Philosophy.

Gutierrez models "Women In Trouble" on Pedro Almodovar's more flamboyant comedies, going so far as to thank the Spanish filmmaker in the closing credits. It's one thing, though, for the Oscar-winning Almodovar to mix lewd humor with soapy scenarios and quite another for the writer of "Snakes On a Plane," ''The Big Bounce" and "Gothika" to make the attempt. We'd understand if Almodovar doesn't appreciate the shout-out.

The occupations of the movie's "women in trouble" betray the conceit — there's a porn star, a flight attendant, a prostitute, another porn star, a masseuse, another prostitute and well you get the idea. Gutierrez wants us to understand that sexy women have hopes and dreams and feelings, too, though his attempts to meld tender moments with raunchy comedy wind up being funny for all the wrong reasons.

The movie establishes its uninhibited idiocy from the outset. Porn star legend Elektra Luxx (Carla Gugino) and industry up-and-comer Holly Rocket (Adrianne Palicki) are about to film a sex scene when Elektra receives a cell phone call from her doctor. She's pregnant!

Elektra peels out of the parking lot, backs into Holly (she's OK because, after all, she's just a dumb blond) and drives to her doctor's office where she gets trapped in an elevator with Doris (Connie Britton), a high-strung careerist with a dark past. Being locked in close confines for a lengthy period encourages the women to share sob stories while stripping down to their underwear because you know it's stuffy in there.

It's the first of the movie's many intersecting, soft-core plot threads. There's also the star-struck stewardess (Marley Shelton) battling turbulence in her bid to join the Mile High Club with a drug-addled rock star (Josh Brolin), a precocious adolescent (Isabella Gutierrez, the filmmaker's daughter) who claims she can see the future and a freaky story about how a dog named Ringo triggered childhood abuse and Holly's inability to perform a certain sex act.

The attractive cast, notably the earthy Gugino, tries hard to invest the one-note characters with a degree of humanity, but are betrayed at every turn by the thin material. The campy tone negates Gutierrez's ill-advised attempts at pathos, and the humor usually falls flat. Quentin Tarantino could make a five-minute riff on songwriting drummers work; Gutierrez just reminds you how much you hate the Eagles.

"Women In Trouble," a Screen Media Films release, is rated R for sexual content including strong dialogue, and for language.
Running time: 95 minutes.
One star out of four.

"Obama was elected to the Illinois Senate in 1996, succeeding State Senator Alice Palmer as Senator from the Illinois' 13th District" This is taken straight from Obama's bio online. You could find anything online these days, even talk show hosts from Alaska who like to talk about the bad choices their governing bodies make. But I do stand corrected. Thanks for pointing that out!

Palin is not terribly experienced, but she is not running for President. Obama is.

8 years as a senator? Wrong! I counted. Obama was elected to the Senate in November 2004. That's only 4 years, 2 of which he has spent running for office. Wow, he has 2 years in the Senate, wow.

The figures are this Palin was an elected Mayor to a town, Wasilla, Al, a town the size of our very own Colusa. When the Governors seat came up for re-election, she beat a very unfavored Governor. She did at one point have a 90 percent approval rate amongst the citizens of Alaska, however it was brief. After ONLY 2 years of being Governor, she is now VP candidate. Obama on the other hand is a civil rights attorney, holds or has held the seat of many Committes on Capital Hill and has been an Illinois State Senator for 8, count'em 8 years. Sounds like experience to me! By the way, back in Oct 2007, Petraeus testified before congress that an Iranian ambassador in Iraq was 'making threats'and suggested we pursue attacking Iran. When the good general was asked for evidence, he was unable to provide any WHATSOEVER, so I guess it depends on who you are and what you think of this down home good ol' boy shoot em up war and are concerned about this outrageous spending to define "success" in Iraq. There is a reason "Petreaus" is also known as "Betray Us".

Obama has more experience? How do you figure that out? What has he run in his life? Has he been an executive administrator of anything? As far as the war, McCain will do what it takes to make sure we are successful in Iraq. He was the one who pushed for Petraus to be commander in the first place and it hsa shown to be a wise and effective decision.

Isn't it funny that the republicans are so concerned about Obamas lack of experience. Have they forgotten who takes over should the President become incapacitated. I also find it amusing that McCain has asked that the media respect his running mates private life and stop the attacks. ARE YOU KIDDING ME, Republicans live for the opportunity to drag Democrats through the mud, and nothing is off limits, especially their private lives.

Why is everone forgetting that Palin has as little or less experience than Obama. Wasn't that the Republicans stance against Obama in the begining. Now it is OK because thier canadate has so little. Two faced as usual. Seondly McCain has really not let the American public know how he will fix the economy except that he would like to leave our boys in the Middle East fighting for the next 100 years. And for Kim Davis keep your comments to your party because as a Hillary supporter I would never vote for the non pro choice Republicans. Ene though Obama did not add a whole lot more to his speech on change he is still a better canidate than McCain.

I could not be sure if McCain has the Hillars voters. Palin has voiced her stance several times on how she is por life and a great majority of the Hillars voters are pro choice. Also she and McCain both voted against Sex Ed in the classroom. Bummer. Maybe her daughter would have benefited from that? The ol abstinence only policy did not work here. Ok before the response to this comment it that I am personally attacking her teenage daughter let us remember that Palin did NOT have to bring her into the limelight in the manner she did. Despite what the corporate media is alleging which is that she was forced to reveal this.
