Businesses cited for violations
Four Colusa area businesses were cited for failing to maintain workers’ compensation insurance on their employees following a compliance check in November.
Colusa County District Attorney John Poyner announced the citations, and noted eight businesses were contacted during the random checks on Nov. 20.
Four of the businesses were in Colusa, two were in Arbuckle, one was in College City and the last one was in Maxwell, Poyner said, in a press release.
One of the businesses received an administrative warning from the California Division of Industrial Relations for improper time card management and improper overtime documentation, the release said. In addition, one of the businesses also had an expired contractor’s license, which was confiscated and returned to the State Contractor’s License Board.
The investigator from the Department of Labor Relations was assisted by an investigator from the Butte County District Attorney’s office who was cross-sworn to work on Colusa County’s behalf under a cooperative agreement between the two counties’ district attorney offices.
Additional compliance checks are planned in the future, Poyner said.
He added it is important employers follow minimum labor standards, maintain workers’ compensation insurance for employees, and maintain proper business licenses as required by Colusa County and California.
Contractors must be properly licensed for the job they are performing and must maintain workers’ compensation insurance for their employees, Poyner said.
Poyner also suggests consumers make sure a contractor is properly licensed prior to any construction work, that they obtain several written estimates for the work to be done and obtain the proper permits from the building department.
