Cars will shine, tires will burn, hydraulics will bump and crowds will roar during Corning's 16th annual May Madness Car Show to be held Friday and Saturday.
Along with the event's standards including burn outs, hydraulic competition, car show and 4x4 pull, this year will feature hot-air balloon rides at Yost Park, weather permitting.
Also new this year is the Corning Car Show "Model Car Contest," sponsored by H&R Block. Entry forms are available at the Chamber of Commerce office and registration will be Saturday from 8 to 10 a.m. in front of H&R Block, 1315 Solano St. Divisions will include child/adult, junior, adult, and senior.
Hosted and organized by the Chamber of Commerce Car Show Committee, May Madness draws crowds that line the main street of town with people, food, music, activities, and cars of just about every make, model, year, color and condition.
"This event has become a great Corning tradition and we are excited to see it growing bigger and better each year," said the car show committee in its May Madness sponsor book.
Two days of fun starts Friday at 5:30 p.m. as car show registrants cruise their four and two-wheeled vehicles down Solano Street in downtown Corning.
The May Madness Mixer will be take place that same evening in downtown with dinner and live music from 6 to 9 p.m.
Bright and early on Saturday the fun will rev up again at 7 a.m. with a pancake breakfast, car show, and the car and motorcycle swap meet.
The Re/Max hot-air balloon with take to the skies starting at 8 a.m. at $5 per ride with proceeds going to local charities. One of the event's most popular features is the Burn Outs held in front of the Corning Police Department on Third Street, where rubber is laid, smoke billows and engines scream, as the crowd cheers drivers on.
Growing in fame is the Low Rider Hydraulic Show and 4x4 RTI Ramp climb and 4x4 pull.
All of the activities culminate with raffles, awards and prizes throughout the day, including the presentation of car show award plaques for several divisions, and the announcement of the Mayor's Choice, Chamber's Choice, and Participant's Choice winners.
