Surrounded by people congratulating her on being named Corning Union High School's Senior Student of the Year, Jennifer Crane kept saying, "I just can't believe this."
Crane, the 18-year-old daughter of Stan and Yolanda Crane, received the recognition during the high school's Senior Awards Night held at the school on Wednesday.
As Principal Charlie Troughton removed the red cloth-covered picture of Crane and made the announcement, Crane said she looked up and thought, "This can't be happening. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. My second thought was how proud I am to be representing Corning High School."
Crane, who has been accepted at University of California, Los Angeles, was also one of many seniors to be awarded some part of the $293,260 in scholarships presented that night.
"You are the students who got involved and made this happen. Thank you for your hard work and effort," Troughton said.
A total of 189 scholarships, certificates and plaques were presented to students in the school's Class of 2012.
The senior to take home the most amount of cash was Mayra Diera, who was awarded 11 scholarships totaling $67,700, one of which was for $30,000 from the McConnell's Scholar Program, another a $20,000 Kentucky Fried Chicken Scholarship, and a $10,000 scholarship from College OPTIONS University.
Corning Union High School District awarded one Rodgers Ranch Scholarship for $16,000 to Courtney Thomson, three Rodgers Ranch Scholarships for $8,000 to Nicolas Bergen, Chelsea Dale, and Jennifer Devers, and 12 scholarships for $4,000. Included in the $4,000 awards were the Pathways scholarships, which went to Tim Hofman for agriculture, Sammy Solorio for business technology, Candelaria Pahua for health and Becky Lo for visual/performing arts.
The high school's Athletes of the Year plaques went to Ryan Holland and Karlie Jennings.
Class Valedictorians Award plaques were presented to Courtney Thomson, Jennifer Devers, Chelsea Dale and Nicolas Bergen, and the Salutatorian Award plaques went to Jennifer Crane and Mayra Diera.
Corning Mayor Gary Strack presented the Julian T. Levy Valedictorian Award.
"As small-town mayor, I congratulate you (the seniors) on making it into this next stage in your life," Strack said.
