The driver of a mini-van carrying seven people ran from the scene after a crash early Wednesday that sent all his passengers and one other person to area hospitals – including two to Colusa Regional Medical Center.
The passengers in the van claim they don’t know who the driver is or what he looks like, the California Highway Patrol said.
“What are the odds of that?” Officer Jodie Beck said.
The two-car crash happened on Highway 20, west of Humphrey Road, near Sutter.
Eight people were hospitalized with minor injuries, including seven passengers in the 1998 Chevrolet Astro Van, the CHP said.
The male driver fled the scene before emergency personnel arrived.
Celerino Tenorio, 46, of Olivehurst, was driving a 2000 Toyota pickup truck west on Highway 20 and pulled to the right shoulder to make a U-turn on the roadway.
The mini-van was behind the truck and the unidentified driver “did not have time to stop” before his vehicle T-boned the pickup as it started to turn around, the CHP said.
The truck veered off into a roadside ditch on the east side of the highway, while the van went into another ditch on the west side.
“All occupants in both vehicles were wearing seatbelts and it’s unknown whether alcohol or drugs played a factor at this time,” the CHP said.
Beck said it was still unclear exactly who was at fault in the collision.
All eight people in the van were on their way to work on a Colusa County farm, Beck said. None are Colusa County residents.
Tenorio was taken to Fremont Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.
