Fire chief’s truck stolen, burned

Not long after Sacramento River Fire Chief Jeff Winters reported his 2004 Chevy Silverado stolen Tuesday morning, he found it.

The vehicle was discovered on the levee near Colusa by Sacramento River firefighters, shortly before 6 a.m.

“We had just begun to investigate the stolen vehicle when we were notified that the fire department found it,” said Bob Kays, California Highway Patrol Public Affairs Officer. “It was fully engulfed.”

According to Kays, a camper at the Sacramento River Recreation Area had called to report the suspicious fire on the levee, just north of the campground.

Kays said the keys had been left in the vehicle, which was stolen sometime in the night from Winters’ Lafayette St. residence.

Colusa Police Department officials said Tuesday it was the second time the bright red fire chief’s truck was stolen.

Lt. Ross Stark said Winters reported the vehicle stolen once before in 2005, after leaving the keys in the ignition.

It was recovered a short time later, just outside Colusa. The vehicle had been in a collision and had received moderate damage.

Brian Copeland, then 25, was arrested and charged with the theft, Stark said.

According to Kays, the CHP is following several leads in the case and expect an arrest.

“We have an idea who did it, but it’s still under investigation,” Kays said.

Winters could not be reached for comment.

The CHP is asking anyone with information or was a witness to the fire, call Officer Kayes at 473-2821.

Yes it's me, Flame Thrower again, I've given more thought to this situation with Winter's and his smoking fire truck. The Indian Casino most likely has picked a new one out for him from their -Community For Sale- catolog. They buy so much out of this catolog I here they get 20 percent off. The Flame Thrower has spoken.

Good guy or not, a public offical charged with providing emergency services and supervising others has to be more responsible. This would indeed be comical if not for the loss of taxpayers hard earned money. Word has it he had the practice of leaving the keys in the vehicle so that others could access them if needed. Indeed they did appear to be very accessible. He should be held acountable, especially since this had occurred once before. Leadership begains with leading by example. Enough said.

Ok, everyone is upset over tax dollars. However, just because it isn't 1950 and it is 2008 doesn't mean that half the residents in colusa county leave their keys in the car. Everyone does it and I think the person that should be talked about is the theif not winters.

I think all of you guys except TBONE are scum. Things happen and no one is perfect. Winters is a good guy but you all assume there is a motive here. Do you guys even know what motive means? Anyways, I hope you all have fun being hypocrites and some of you need to go back to school and take English again.

Yeh, I remember the CODE 3 Winters pulled down the parade route a few years ago. I still cringe when I think about how little kids could have run out in front of him and been run over. Winters does not project the best judgement then nor now.

Not once but twice stolen. Give me a break. I don't care how much good this guy has done. The district tax payers should not pay for his stupid mistake. Remember the code three fair parade some years back? Stupid is is stupid does.

Not too smart leaving your keys in the truck, again. This isn't 1950. Now the taxpayers will have to get him a new twuck.

As lame as this is, meaning, if the truck was a government vehicle, it means it was paid by taxpayer money. Why would anyone want to torch a fire truck? Okay, irony. Pretty funny. But it's funnier in talk than in action. Lame, lame.

noname - Nov 19, 2008 09:48:00 AM Remove Comment

Here's an idea. It's 2008. Don't leave your keys in your truck. Is this his personal vehicle or is it owned by the government? Be responsible. If a pick-up was stolen once due to keys being left in it, remove the keys from the vehicle. It sounds like the driver is irresponsible.
