DUI checkpoint in Colusa on Friday

A sobriety check point will be set up in downtown Colusa from 6 p.m. Friday to 1 a.m. Saturday, the Avoid the 9 agency announced.
Additionally, saturation patrols will hit the streets in Williams and Colusa on Friday, and the CHP and law enforcement will be out in force throughout the holiday weekend.
The Memorial Day weekend is considered the first holiday travel period of the summer season, and when coupled with the many college and high school graduations, more celebrations are expected.
“The summer months traditionally see a rise in DUI deaths and injuries,” Chris Murphy, director of the California Office of Traffic Safety, said in a statement released by the Avoid the 9.
Avoid the 9 is a group of nine regional law enforcement agencies. The lead agency is the Marysville Police Department. It includes the Colusa and Williams police departments, as well as the CHP.
“Take measures to use a designated sober driver and call 911 to report a suspected drunk driver should you witness the tale-tale signs of impairment, such as weaving, crossing the center line, or a driver slow to start when the signal light turns green,” Murphy said.
Tips for a safer weekend include:
• Arrange rides home for your friends, family, co-workers and yourself before the drinking begins
• Those hosting celebrations and servers must limit drinks to your guests or patrons. Don’t serve more than one or two over several hours.
• Identify and provide free non-alcoholic drinks to the designated driver
• Cut back on the amount of drinks you plan to bring to the party, and provide plenty of food.
