Colusa County shows its best

The Colusa County Fair opened Thursday with loads of cotton candy, live sharks, livestock exhibits, beauty queens and carnival rides.

It also opened its gates to one of the largest opening-night crowds in history.

“It might just be the fabulous weather,” said Joy Shifflett, 44th District Agriculture Association chairwoman. “But I think a lot has to do with what we have to offer. The Colusa County Fair is the best fair of our size in the state.”

Shifflett said she will be anxious to see final estimates of fair attendance after the event wraps up Sunday, providing the weekend continues to hold to mild temperatures.

Thursday’s first day included a patriotic ceremony at the front gates of the fairgrounds with members of the Maxwell American Legion and the Colusa Veterans of Foreign Wars.

“The Colusa County Fair is a heritage,” said H. L. Peterson, commander of VFW Post No. 2441. “Most veterans here, like in the past, pledged four or more years of their lives to assure the heritage we celebrate will never be forgotten. Let’s enjoy it.”

Shifflett said the fair’s successful first few days could be credited to having so much local participation, from the many local exhibitors to the fair’s line up of local bands.

“We have a tremendous amount of talent in the county,” she said. “It’s unbelievable.”

Visitors also flocked to see the live shark exhibit and Russell Bros. Circus under the big top. While the carnival attracted the teens others flocked to see 17-year-old Anastasia Cristler win the Miss Colusa County Pageant on Thursday.

While many strolled through the exhibits others enjoyed games and a variety of interactive activity. Michael Hafferty, 9, of Meridian and brother Corbin, 14, spent their first hours at the fair Thursday riding on and being tossed from a mechanical bull.

“It’s a lot of fun,” Michael Hafferty  said. “My brother is pretty good at it.”

The Colusa County Fair continues Saturday with the junior livestock auction at 9 a.m., the Tuff-Truck and Mud Bog competition at the grandstands at 7 p.m. The band “Legend” will perform two shows at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. on the Main Stage.

Sunday’s events include the Destruction Derby at 7 p.m.
