UPDATE: ATV accident victim in critical condition

A Williams woman struck by an SUV while riding her ATV on HIghway 20 remains in critical condition today with head and upper body injuires at Enloe Medical Center in Chico, hospital officials said.

Both lanes of Highway 20 just west of Schaad Road in Williams were shut down Tuesday evening after the ATV collided with the SUV, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Mariel Cervantes, 21, received major head trauma and injuries to her upper body when she was thrown from the all-terrain vehicle, after being struck by 2002 Dodge Durango, driven by Ed Lewis of Redcrest, the CHP reported.

Cervantes was driving the ATV eastbound on Highway 20, pulling a trailer, when she attempted to turn left onto Schaad Road, according to CHP public information Officer John Waggoner.

Waggoner said Lewis was traveling behind the ATV, when he attempted to pass the slow-moving vehicle just as Cervantes made the turn.

The Dodge struck Cervantes broadside and ejected her off her vehicle. She was not using any safety equipment, Waggoner said.

Cervantes was airlifted to Enloe around 6 p.m. and the highway was reopened.

Lewis and his passenger were uninjured, the CHP said.

Although Cervantes was illegally driving an off-road vehicle on a state highway, Waggoner said it is unknown at this time if she will be cited for the violation.

The collision remains under investigation, the CHP said.
