Injury crash ends in DUI arrest

The driver of a 1998 GMC Suburban has been arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence after he crashed his vehicle into a big rig near Corning on Monday.

Stanley Smith, 44, of Antelope, and his passenger, Oleg Lyu, 22, sustained major injuries, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The CHP reported Smith was driving the GMC on the southbound Interstate 5 off-ramp when he drove right through the stop sign at Liberal Avenue and slammed into the side of eastbound big rig.

The driver of the big rig, Larry Jacobs, 57, of Grants Pass, Ore., was not injured.

Neither of the injured men were wearing seat belts, said CHP Officer Phillip Mackintosh.

"Smith was arrested for felony driving under the influence and other drug charges," Mackintosh said. "Lyu was also arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance."

Both men were transported to Enloe Medical Center in Chico, Lyu by medical helicopter, and Smith by ambulance. Hospital personnel said Smith is currently listed in fair condition. The hospital did not have a condition listing for Lyu.

CHP is asking anyone with additional information to the incident to call the Red Bluff Office at 527-2034.
