Briefs: Stand Down is this week

The Yuba-Sutter Stand Down, for local veterans, active duty personnel and their families, is set Thursday to Saturday at the pavilion in Beckwourth Riverfront Park in Marysville.

Activities are scheduled 8 a.m.-4 p.m. all three days. Opening ceremonies are at noon Friday.

The event includes a variety of services including food, clothing and shelter; information on legal assistance, veterans benefits and employment; and dental services.

Veterans not registered in the VA system can contact Marvin King at 749-6710 or the VA Clinic at 425 Plumas St., Yuba City.

The Yuba-Sutter Stand Down office is at 604 D St., Marysville.

Gridley

Butte County Fairkicks off Thursday

The Butte County Fair begins Thursday in Gridley, with the opening day featuring the Miss Butte County competition along with the Missette and Miss Teen contests.

All three competitions are on the Courtyard Stage starting at 6 p.m.

The fair, with the theme Not Going Down Without a Fight, ends Sunday at 199 E. Hazel St.

Hours are 4 p.m.-11 p.m. Thursday; 3 p.m.-midnight Friday; noon-midnight Saturday; and noon-11 p.m. Sunday.

Daily admission is $3 Thursday; and $3 and $8 Friday to Sunday.

Activities during the fair also include the destruction derby at 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, with tickets $21 and $25 each day.

Admission to the fair does not include admission to the destruction derby.

Driving classesfor teens/parents

The California Highway Patrol Yuba-Sutter office is hosting Start Smart driving classes for teenagers and their parents at 7 p.m. Sept. 19 at its office, 1619 Poole Blvd., Yuba City.

The free program is geared toward reducing collisions and injuries involving teen drivers.
