Colusa County blanks Humboldt on rugby pitch

Rain gave way to sunshine and left the field dry for a great day of rugby in Humboldt on Saturday for the Colusa County Rugby Football Club.

The game started as a defensive battle against the Humboldt Old Growth but Colusa finished strong and returned home with a 21-0 St. Patrick's Day victory.

The first twenty minutes were played between the 22 meter lines and consisted of big hits and quick passes before Colusa made the first charge at the try zone. Humboldt held Colusa from scoring with good tackles until Nate Polit powered his way into the try zone to put in the first score between the posts. Chris Smith added the two point conversion and Colusa took the lead 7-0.

As the first half wound down, quick passes lead to Mitchell Barsotti breaking loose for a long run and Colusa took the lead 14-0 at halftime.

The second half started much like the first with a defensive battle, both teams hit hard and stopped the opposing offense from gaining good field position. With about ten minutes in the second half remaining, Enoch Martinez scored Colusa's third try, and his first as a player, making it 21-0.

Humboldt tried to push in a score at goal line but after a three minute defensive stand with thirteen players on the field, Colusa was able to kick the ball back into Humboldt's end of the field to end the game.

Colusa (3-2) plays Shasta (5-0) at 1 p.m. Saturday at Egling Middle School.
