Cross Country

RedHawks soar at Las Plumas Invitational

Colusa High tuned up for the Butte View League cross country season with an appearance Sept. 14 at the Las Plumas Invitational in Oroville.

Ross Cervantes paced the varsity boys team with a fifth-place finish out of 61 runners and covered the three-mile course in 17 minutes, 15 seconds.

Luke Corriea (19th, 18:39), Felipe Granados (23rd, 19:12), Eric Barrera (29th, 19:32) and Ryan Mead (33rd, 20:07) rounded out the RedHawks' top five.

Paige Townzen led the varsity girls team with an 11th-place finish (22:35). Aimee Maldanado (24th, 26:52), Mariana Martinez (31st, 28:44), Alexia Vargas (32nd, 29:24) and Nancy Lopez (35th, 31:16) ran for Colusa.

On the 2.1-mile junior varsity course, freshman Max Valdez took first place by 17 seconds by completing the race in 12:10. Christian Marzan followed closely behind, placing fifth (12:49) and Alan Iniguez took 12th (13:26). Teddy Vaillancourt (21st, 13:51) and Cai Dunham (39th, 14:46) completed the RedHawks' top five.

Only two RedHawks competed in the junior varsity girls race. Nadine Ahola took 10th place (16:21) and Andrea Thomas placed 38th (26:55).

Colusa hosts the first BVL meet of the season on Wednesday.

Tennis

Colusa 8, Sutter 1

Sutter brought just four players to Colusa on Thursday and the RedHawks claimed an 8-1 victory while resting their top four players.

Cheyenne Laux stepped in and defeated Sutter's Megan Deschamps (6-4, 6-2) in the No. 1 singles match. Taylor Davies beat Tiffany Spradley (6-3, 6-1) in the No. 2 spot. Ann Kalisuch moved up to varsity and earned a victory against Madelyn Tarke (6-2, 6-3), and Sidney Wills closed out the singles matches with a win against Rachel Benish (6-0, 6-2).

Ashley Cotter and Haley Lyss took on Sutter's top doubles pair of Deschamps and Spradley and lost 8-3 but Kodie Solis and Ashley Roman came out on top against Tarke and Benish by the score of 8-3.

Volleyball

Colusa 3, Esparto 0

Colusa (6-7) made short work of host Esparto on Wednesday, sweeping the Spartans 25-12, 25-7, 25-17.

Teale Stacey made five kills, two blocks and an ace. Emily Mobley added six kills, three aces and a block.

Ruby Dunham had four kills, and Brittanee Garcia and Mattie Myers added three aces each.

Wheatland 3, Colusa 0

The RedHawks struggled against Wheatland (12-2) on Tuesday, losing to the host Pirates 25-18, 25-11, 25-17.

Mobley led Colusa with seven blocks, four kills and two aces. Yasmin Moreno made 11 digs and Myers dished out six assists.

Pierce 3, Esparto 0

The Bears (9-3, 2-0 SVL) swept a struggling Esparto team 25-20, 25-8, 25-11 on Thursday in Arbuckle.

Natalie Corona led the Bears with 11 kills, Ellen Hansen had five aces, Mariah Diaz had three blocks and Madison Leighty made 30 assists.

William 3, Elk Creek 0

The Yellowjackets made the trip to Elk Creek and swept the Elks 25-10, 25-19 and 25-16 on Tuesday.
