Varsity Volleyball
Colusa 3, Quincy 0
The RedHawks needed just three games to beat Quincy High 25-17, 25-23, 25-21 on Tuesday in Colusa.
Emily Mobley led Colusa with 10 kills, two blocks and served two aces. Teale Stacey added four kills, eight digs and two blocks, and Yasmin Moreno had a team-high three aces.
Pierce 3, Live Oak 0
The Bears kept Live Oak winless in Sacramento Valley League play with a 25-13, 25-16, 25-11 sweep Tuesday in Arbuckle.
Six Pierce players had at least two kills, Mariah Diaz and Natalie Corona led the team with five kills each, and Madison Leighty led the Bears with four aces. Macey Cox came up with 12 digs and Leighty made 20 assists.
Maxwell 3, Portola 0
The Panthers remained undefeated in Mid-Valley League play after sweeping Portola High 25-18, 25-8, 25-16 on Thursday in Portola.
Kaily McKinley led Maxwell (8-2, 3-0 MVL) with nine kills, Brittney Haywood made seven kills, Jenna Powell made five and Jessica Jenkins had three. Lauren LaGrande and Taylor Perry added two kills apiece.
Cross Country
Four of the top eight varsity boys runners hailed from Colusa High and the RedHawks won the Butte View League meet Wednesday in Gridley by a wide margin.
"It was the best performance our varsity team has had so far this season. Every runner, from No. 7 to No. 1, ran his very best today. It was amazing and I was very proud of each of them," Colusa coach Matt Giffin said.
Ross Cervantes (2nd, 17:05), Max Valdez (5th, 17:44), Christian Marzan (6th, 17:57), Luke Corriea (8th, 18:22) and Felipe Granados (15th, 19:13) led the scoring charge, and Ryan Mead (20th, 19:34) and Ernesto Mendez (21st, 19:38) also notched fast times.
Paige Townzen finished second in the varsity girls race, eight seconds behind race leader Madison Schell of Durham. Townzen ran the three-mile course in 21 minutes, 2 seconds.
The RedHawks had just four runners and didn't qualify for the team lead, but Mariana Martinez (12th, 26:38), Aimee Maldonado (13th, 27:52) and Alexia Vargas (15th, 28:32) turned in strong times.
Nadine Ahola won the junior varsity girls race in 19:04 and Andrea Thomas placed fifth.
Alan Iniguez (3rd, 16:24), Teddy Vaillancourt (4th, 16:28), Cai Dunham (7th, 17:40), Sal Valencia (9th, 18:18), Tristen Mendenhall (12th, 18:45) and Bryan Garibay (16th, 20:11) led the junior varsity boys to a team victory.
Tennis
Colusa 9, Mercy 0
The RedHawks traveled to Red Bluff to face a short-handed Mercy High team on Tuesday and secured a 9-0 victory.
Colusa's Kimberlee Harmon defeated Stefanie Cheek (6-1, 6-0) in the No. 1 singles match. Stephanie Munguia claimed the win in the No. 2 singles match against Irlanda Hernandez (6-1, 6-0). Hailey Gao gave Colusa's Mackenzie Bressler a good fight before losing 6-2, 6-3. Ann Kalisuch defeated Ying He (6-1, 6-1)
Harmon and Ashley Cotter teamed up to beat Cheek and Hernandez 8-3, and Munguia and Rosi Morales defeated Ying and Gao 8-0.
