Colusa, Westside teams reach District 2 finals

The Colusa 9-10 all-stars defeated Westside twice at the District 2 tournament held in Kelseyville, including an 8-3 win in the opener and a 13-7 victory on Tuesday.

Colusa and Westside began all-stars play on June 27 with Colusa getting a solid pitching performance from Rigo Santana. He pitched the first three and at third innings and gave up two runs on three hits with seven strikeouts.

Carter Cunningham led the offense, going 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI and a run scored. Logan Allegrini and Justin Davies also knocked in one run apiece with a basehit while Nan Rodriguez was 1-for-2 with a run scored.

For Westside, Weston Leighty was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored while Peyton Schmidt was 1-for-3 with two RBI. Cole Travis and Martin Solis each had one hit apiece.

Lewis Davalos pitched for Williams and struck out one batter while Leighthy struck out three.

Westside bounced back to beat Southshore 14-2 in an elimination game. Devin Lee was 4-for-4 with an RBI while Davalos wetn 3-for-5 with two RBI. Leighty and Schmidt also had three hits apiece with Schmidt driving in two runs. Garrett Braindard added two hits and scored three runs.

Brainard also got the win, going four innings and giving up two runs on four hits with 11 strikeouts.

Meanwhile Colusa fell to Westshore 10-0 in the second round. Andrew Ferraioulo, Santana and Davies had the only hits for Colusa. Shane Saso pitched for Colusa and struck out five.

That set up a rematch between Colusa and Westside in the elimination bracket on Tuesday with Colusa winning 13-7.

Cunningham was 4-for-4 with two RBI for Colusa while Jarred Huff was 3-for-4 with four RBI. Garrett Hamilton added two hits and two RBI.

Logan Allegrini pitched four innings for the win, striking out four.

Colusa trailed 7-3, but scored five runs in the fourth inning and five in the fifth to take the lead.

Travis had three hits and an RBI for Westside while David Hernandez and Brainard both had two hits.

Colusa played on Thursday in an elimination game.

11-12 baseball

Colusa advanced to the championship game with a pair of wins in the elimination bracket this week at the District 2 tournament in Lakeport.

Colusa rallied for four runs in the sixth inning to eliminate Kelseyville 10-6 on Monday. Jose Santana had a home run in the win and Chad Elliott was 4-for-4 with two doubles.

Colusa then scored five runs in the sixth inning to upend Southshore 11-8 on Tuesday.

Spencer Hackney had a double and Dalton Charter was 2-for-3 with a triple to lead the Colusa offense.

Colusa played Westshore on Wednesday in the championship game. Colusa lost to Westshore in the first round. No score was available at press time.

9-10 Softball

Both Colusa and Westside picked up wins in the District 2 tournament at Westshore with Westside advancing to the championship game.

Westside won its opener against Southshore on Sunday, 15-5, and then played Westshore, which had defeated Colusa 18-17, on Monday and won a marathon contest 38-30.

Colusa dropped to the loser’s bracket and topped Southshore 21-12 to meet Westshore in an elimination game on Wednesday. The score of that game was not available at press time.

If Colusa won, it would play Westside on July 5 at 5:30 p.m. at Westshore Little League in Lakeport. Westside only needs to win once to win the West tournament championship.

11-12 Softball

The Colusa 11-12 all-stars captured the West division championship of the District 2 all-stars and advanced to the finals after three impressive wins in Clearlake.

After opening the tournament with an 18-1 win over Southshore, Colusa whipped Westshore 18-4 on Monday.

Gabby DeLaRosa, Ashleigh Biggs, Mattie Myers and Taylor Davies all pitched one inning each and combined to give up four runs on five hits with four strikeouts and only two walks.

Meanwhile the Colusa offense banged out 16 hits. Gabby Rodriguez led the attack with four hits while DeLaRosa had three, Amanda Hansen, Myers and Bonita Garcia had two each and Davies and Emily Mobley each had one.

After Westshore defeated Southshore 14-12 on Tuesday, Colusa won the rematch with Westshore on Wednesday, 18-0.

DeLaRosa, Myers and Biggs combined for the win, allowing no runs on just two hits. DeLaRosa struck out one, Myers three and Biggs two.

On offense, Lauren Ferreira and Rodriguez each had three hits and two RBI. DeLaRosa drove in two runs with a basehit while Myers and Jayden Garcia each had two basehits.

Colusa will play in the District 2 East-West finals starting on Monday at 7 p.m. at Sutter Buttes. Since Colusa is undefeated, it would have to lose twice to be eliminated.

Junior Softball

Colusa overcame an early deficit to defeat Olivehurst-Linda in the first round of the District 2 junior softball all-stars on Monday.

Colusa trailed 3-2 in the third, but scored four runs in the fourth inning and five in the fifth to build a 11-5 lead. Colusa held on for the 13-9 win.

Abby Cranford led the Colusa offense, going 2-for-4 with three runs scored, three RBI and an inside the park home run.

Katrina LaGrande added three hits, including a double, and two runs scored while Kristy Nair had a two-run double.

Kayla Cunha pitched the first three innings and gave up three runs on five hits with two strikeouts while Laura Wells threw the final four frames and gave up six runs on four hits with five strikeouts.

Colusa was scheduled to play on Tuesday, but a wet field forced the game to be played on Wednesday. Results were not available at press time.

Junior Baseball

The Westside/Colusa junior all-stars fell to Southshore in their opener on Monday, but bounced back to defeat Westshore 13-3 on Tuesday.

Westside/Colusa played an elimination game on Thursday, results of which were unavailable at press time.

Russell Jones had a triple for Westside/Colusa’s only hit in the loss to Southshore.

Jones then had a two-trun triple to open the scoring against Westshore on Tuesday.

Chad Zoller also singled in the inning to score Jones.

Jones added an RBI single that plated Jordan Hilis in the fourth inning, but Westshore closed the gap to 5-3 in the fifth.

The strong pitching of Fernando Sotelo and Rod Angus helped prevent Westshore from doing any further damage.

Colusa ended the game in the sixth thanks to a double by Ivan Rodriguez and RBI singles by Jones, Zoller, and Angus.
