Colusa/Westside seniors win section
The Colusa/Westside senior softball team defeated Redwood Empire Little League in a best-of-three series to capture first place in the Section 2 tournament last week.
With only two teams in the tournament, Colusa/Westside needed only win two games in order to advance to the division tournament. Colusa lost the first game 4-3, but bounced back to win the next two, 10-6 and 14-11 to advance to the division tournament.
Colusa/Westside opened division play on July 16 and played Morada of Section 6 and won 6-3. Colusa/Westside then lost to Manteca 4-3 and Antioch 6-5 and was eliminated from the tournament.
In the first game against Redwood Empire, Kodi Gimblin scored twice and had a single and a triple. Abby Cranford and Laura Wells each had a single while Kayla Cunha had a triple.
In the second game, Colusa/Westside scored twice in the first inning, four times in the third and four more in the fifth to stake a large lead against RELL.
Colusa/Westside only had a few hits in the game and took advantage of walks by the RELL pitchers. Abby Cranford got the win for Colusa/Westside.
Colusa/Westside won a wild one in game three, scoring three runs in the seventh inning to take a 14-6 lead. It then had to hold off a big rally by RELL, which scored five runs in its final at-bat to make the game close.
Cunha, Kendall Otterson, Cranford and Gimblin all had two hits apiece in the win.
Against Moraga, Colusa/Westside never trailed after breaking a 1-1 tie in the third inning with a run by Cunha. C/W added two more runs in the fourth by Wells and Cranford and two in the sixth as well by Cranford and Emiley Correa. Cunha, Wells, Cranford and Rylee Kampf had the only hits in the game for Colusa/Westside.
