Colusa, Williams, Maxwell, Princeton open at home, Pierce on the road

The Colusa Redskins and Williams Yellowjackets met in a four-way scrimmage on Saturday with both teams showing the ability to make the big play.

Colusa had several long runs by Carlos Gutierrez during the scrimmage, which also included teams from Gridley and Winters.

Meanwhile Williams put together several sustained drives behind the running of Jesus Camarena, David Covarrubias and Josafat Jimenez.

Both Colusa and Williams open their seasons on Friday. Colusa will host Live Oak while Williams will host Durham both game begin with the junior varsity squads at 5:30 p.m.

Maxwell, Princeton and Pierce will also begin their regular seasons this week.

Pierce scrimmage Hamilton last week and will play at Esparto on Friday.

Meanwhile Maxwell hosts Portola on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity game to follow.

Princeton takes on Liberty Christian on Saturday at 1 p.m. Liberty Christian is fielding an 8-man football team for the first time since 1979.

Many of the local volleyball teams will also be in action this week.

Maxwell will travel to compete in the Durham Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

Meanwhile Williams does not begin play until Sept. 2 when it plays at Princeton.

Pierce hosts Mercy on Sept. 2 in its opener while Colusa hosts Corning on Thursday. The Redskins opened their season Tuesday against East Nicolaus.

The Colusa tennis team opens its season on the road starting today with a nonleague match at Oroville and a nonleague match at Gridley on Thursday.
