Colusa tennis defeats Wheatland, loses to Sutter

Jordan Wilson and Marco Zamora played a marathon 2-hour, 45-minute match on the top court during a non-league match between Wheatland High and host Colusa on Wednesday.

Wilson dropped the first set tie-breaker and trailed 6-5 in the third set before rallying back to earn the 6-7, 6-1, 7-6 victory and complete the RedHawks' sweep of the shorthanded Pirates.

Colusa began the match with a 3-0 team lead because the Pirates brought just four players. Wilson and Zamora's lengthy match ultimately led to Wheatland forfeiting the No. 1 doubles match because it would have started so late.

The RedHawks swept all five matches played. Moises Valdez beat Keith Hoek 6-1, 6-1, Jack Zhao won 6-0, 6-1 against Brandon Cope and Christian Munguia completed the singles sweep with a 6-0, 6-2 victory against Alex Gonzalez.

Diego Rivas and Juan Ruiz defeated Cope and Gonzalez 8-2 to win the only doubles match played.

Colusa's victory came after a 9-0 loss to Sutter High in a non-league match on Tuesday.

Zhao put together the RedHawks' best performance in his loss to Nick Fortina in the No. 3 singles match. Zhao won the first set before Fortina rallied back to win the final two sets (5-7, 7-5, 6-4).

Rivas played well in the No. 5 singles match against Shelby Arvizu, losing 6-3, 7-5. Wilson and Valdez put up a fight in the No. 1 doubles match against Sam Rexton and Arvizu but lost 8-6.
