Colusa County pigskin previews for Sept. 3
Live Oak (0-0) @ Colusa (0-1)
At least Colusa will not be suffering from opening-night jitters, but the nerves could still be there as the Redskins work to show that its 44-0 whitewashing at Hamilton was an unfortunate abomination.
Live Oak finished in the middle of the pack last year at 6-6, but was just 2-4 in the Sacramento Valley League.
The Redskins are going to need to dig their cleats in deeply in the trenches, and are not going to win many games if they duplicate last week's four turnovers.
The defense did and admirable job in the early going against Willows, forcing three field goals with tough stands in the red zone, but they spent a lot of minutes on the football field, which wears down even the most well-conditioned athletes.
Williams (1-0) @ Maxwell (0-0)
The Yellowjackets equaled last year's win total with their 28-0 home domination of Los Molinos, so they already know how to win.
This week, however, they're up against a wide-open, pedal to the metal Maxwell offense that is not going to be kept out of the end zone.
Maxwell is always a tough place to play, given the vocal support the Panthers receive from the home folks, and the seniors are this squad are more than ready to make a name for themselves in their final season.
They've been to the playoff altar in recent years, but have come away the bridesmaid. So Friday night's match-up may prove to be a football marriage that was made anywhere but in Heaven for the 'Jackets.
Hamilton (0-1) @ Pierce (1-0)
The Braves played three good quarters in Orland last Friday, but will need to play four quarters to get the job done, while Pierce played four+, and needed to weather six turnovers for an OT win at Esparto.
The Bears want to try playing ball control, but will have to do a much better job of hanging onto it for the strategy to be effective.
Hamilton's line play will need to open up the holes for its running game to get going, and the defense will have to trip up the Pierce running game, after allowing 288 yards on the ground to Orland.
