High school sports season underway
The local high school sports season is underway with teams beginning practice last week at all of the high schools in Colusa County.
The Colusa Redskins have Bob Miller back for his second year as the varsity head football coach. He’s joined by Randy Watt and Manny Vasquez.
For the junior varsity, Bobby Kirkman will be the head coach, a position he assumed last year midway through the season. He’s joined by Perry Taylor and Arnie Gross.
Toni Ann Apaseo returns for the varsity volleyball team while Effie Vargas is the head coach of the junior varsity squad.
Matt Giffin leads the cross country team while Jim Imhoff will coach the girls tennis team and Ellen McGowan will coach the swim team.
In Williams, Dan McDonald returns for his third year as the Yellowjacket head coach. He’ll have Ben Padilla as an assistant. Travis Hayes will be the head coach of the JV team with Pat Gonzalve assisting him.
In volleyball, Christy Correa returns for her second year on the varsity. Heather Skala will coach the JV team. Tony Hermann returns to coach the cross country squad.
In Maxwell, Robert Wilson is back along with Russ Gardner and Chris Buchanan. Armando Bautista will coach the JV team.
In volleyball, Al Vargas returns as the varsity coach.
At Princeton, Bryan Lex returns to lead the Eagles in the defense of their 8-man football league championship.
Meanwhile in volleyball, Dena Schmidt is back to lead the Eagles.
The Pierce Bears have a familiar face walking the sidelines again this year. Doug Kaelin, who coached the Bears to a section championship in 2004, returns to help out as line coach for the varsity. Roy Perkins is back for his fourth year as head coach of the Bears, who move into a new Sacramento Valley League lineup this year with Live Oak, Willows, Durham, Rio Vista, Mt. Shasta and Trinity.
Chuck Wayman will coach the JV team along with assistants Don Friel and Gary Teague.
In volleyball, Karra Zamora is back for her second season with the varsity squad. Kim Travis, meanwhile, takes over as the junior varsity coach.
