Barber soars to top seed in long jump
Pierce High School senior Michael Barber captured a pair of wins at the Northern Section Division 3 track meet on Friday, qualifying as the top seed in the long jump and setting a new school record in the triple jump.
Barber won the long jump with a distance of 21.4.25, which is the best qualifying mark in the Northern Section. His distance of 43-9.5 in the triple jump set a new school record and places him as the second seed in that event.
Barber also finished third in the high jump with a height of 5-8 and sixth in the 110 hurdles. His performance helped the Bears to a fourth-place finish with 46 points.
Portola won the JV boys division with 121 points while Pierce was third with 87. Nick Delcour took first place in the JV shot put with throw of 42-2.5 while Michael Villanueva was first in the triple jump with a distance of 34-6.25. Diston Jordan was second in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes.
Division 4
In the varsity girls division, Williams finished fourth with 62 points and had four champions. Tori Hibsch won the 100 meters (13.50) and the 200
meters (28.04) while Ashleigh Martini won the 300 low hurdles (54.68) and the triple jump (28-11).
The Yellowjackets also came close to winning the JV girls division, finishing with 88 points to Providence Christian’s 92.
Abigail Cranford won the 100 meters (13.84) and the long jump (15-4.75) and finished second in the 200 meters (28.59) and the triple jump (28-7) for the Yellowjackets.
Division 2
The Colusa High School JV girls track team won five events at the Division 2 section finals on Friday, but it wasn’t enough to knock off Gridley, which scored 154 team points to Colusa’s 123.
Caroline Meyers claimed first place in the 200 meters (27.55) and the long jump (15-1), and also finished second in the 100 meters (13.43). The Redskins also won the 4x100 relay in 55.82 seconds.
Other Redskin winners included Carli Marengo in the 800 meters (2:39.16) and Tenille Tauscher in the shot put (26-5). Tauscher also finished second in the discus (70-06).
For the JV boys, Carlos Gutierrez edged Durham’s Daniel Hodge for the 100-meter championship with a time of 11.86 seconds. Gutierrez finished just behind Dodge in the 200 meters with a clocking of 24.10.
Darren Smith won the long jump for the Redskins, who finished fourth as a team with 61 points. Smith jumped 19-10.75 and also finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 40-10.5.
The only other winner for Colusa was Hayden Duron in the discus with a throw of 112-9. Duron finished second in the shot put with a toss of 43-11.5.
