Sports Roundup: Volleyball, cross country results

Varsity Volleyball

Maxwell 3, Colusa 2

Maxwell High came from behind and stunned the RedHawks in five games to become the only undefeated team in Mid-Valley League play Tuesday in Maxwell.

The Panthers won the first game 25-18 before Colusa (11-11, 3-1 MVL) came back and won the next two games by the score of 25-13. Needing to win the next two games, Maxwell did just that, taking Game 4 by the score of 25-11 and the fifth game, 18-16.

Jenna Powell led the Panthers with 10 kills; Kaily McKinley made nine kills; Jessica Jenkins, seven; Brittney Haywood, four; and Ashley Azevedo and Shelen Boyes added a kill each.

Emily Mobley led the RedHawks with 20 kills, Teale Stacey had four, and Yasmin Moreno made three kills and served two aces. Brittanee Garcia served up four aces; Mattie Myers, three and Bayleigh Salazar, a pair.

The RedHawks junior varsity team won a well played match, 28-26, 25-17.

Maxwell 3, Biggs 0

The Panthers (10-2, 5-0 MVL) completed an undefeated first pass through the MVL schedule Thursday, beating Biggs High 25-17, 25-18, 25-9 in Biggs.

McKinley led Maxwell with seven kills, Powell and Taylor Perry made four, Haywood had three and Azevedo, one.

Maxwell's junior varsity squad won 25-14, 25-20.

Maxwell begins the second half of league play on Thursday with a home game against Quincy. The Panthers escaped Quincy with a 3-2 victory on Sept. 27.

Pierce 3, Durham 2

In a battle for third place in the Sacramento Valley League, Pierce High withstood a tenacious Trojans team and won 25-16, 20-25, 12-25, 25-16, 16-14.

The Bears (12-5, 5-2 SVL) beat the Trojans (12-7, 3-4 SVL) for the second time this year. Pierce returns to action on Tuesday against the Spartans at Esparto High.

Pierce 3, East Nicolaus 0

Pierce bounced back from a loss to Willows with a sweep of host East Nicolaus on Tuesday, 25-13, 25-12, 25-18.

Mariah Diaz and Natalie Corona led the Bears with five kills each, and were joined by Morgan Diaz (4), Hilary Brainard (3), and Ellen Hansen and Karlie Talbot, (2).

Bianca Vazquez and Carissa Cabral served two aces each, Madison Leighty had 20 assists and Macey Cox made 11 digs.

Princeton 3, Champion Christian 0

Maryssa Martin led the Eagles with nine kills in a sweep of Champion Christian, 25-16, 25-12, 25-18, on Tuesday in Chico.

Martin added 12 aces and Amanda Hansen served up eight. Gaby Rodriguez added five kills and Ashley McMartin made three kills for Princeton. Marisela Valencia led the Eagles with nine digs and Natalia Carreon pitched in with seven.

Quincy 3, Williams 1

The Yellowjackets made the long trek up to Quincy High on Thursday and came away with a 3-1 loss to the Trojans.

Williams (3-7, 0-4 MVL) won the second game but the Trojans took the victory 25-9, 20-25, 25-12, 25-14.

Results from Williams' game on Tuesday against Biggs were not available by press time.

Cross Country

RedHawks cross country wins at Wheatland

Ross Cervantes, Christian Marzan and Max Valdez finished in the top four, and Luke Corriea and Felipe Granados added top-10 finishes as the Colusa High varsity boys cross country team picked up another Butte View League victory Wednesday in Wheatland.

Durham's Damon Young won the race but the next three runners to cross the finish line wore RedHawks jerseys. Colusa's Ryan Mead and Ernesto Mendez also finished in the top 15.

Paige Townzen took second place in the varsity girls race and teammate Mariana Martinez finished ninth.

Colusa's Nadine Ahola won the junior varsity girls race by more than a minute and Andrea Thomas finished seventh for the RedHawks.

Alan Iniguez placed second in the junior varsity boys and led winning effort by RedHawks runners. Teddy Vaillancourt (4th), Sal Valencia (5th), Cai Dunham (8th), Tristen Mendenhall (12th) and Bryan Garibay (15th) all laid down fast times on the 2.2-mile course.
