All is Wells for Panthers in season opener
A lot has changed for the Maxwell High baseball team that lost a truckload of talent to graduation and a head coach to retirement after completing an undefeated, section championship winning season in 2011. One thing hasn't changed, the Panthers keep winning.
Maxwell extended its section-record win streak to 47 games with a 13-0 home victory against Williams to open the season under the guidance of new coach Nate Manor.
Senior first baseman Steven Powell went 3-for-3 with five RBIs and three runs scored, and senior Brett Cabral added three hits and three RBIs.
Freshman pitcher Scott Wells picked up where his older brother Tyler left off and tossed a no-hitter in his first start, striking out eight in five innings.
Maxwell (1-0) traveled to Palo Cedro to play Redding Christian on Tuesday and plays Biggs in Maxwell on Thursday.
The Panthers head north to Los Molinos to play in the Glenn Cox Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
