Panthers win Liberty Softball Invitational
The Maxwell High softball team outscored its opponents 37-2 en route to winning the Liberty Softball Invitational.
The Panthers (7-0) dominated Weed High 18-1 in the championship game Saturday at Big League Dreams in Redding.
Alexz Miller went 4-for-5 at the plate with two doubles, a triple and five RBIs, and Jenna Powell was a perfect 4-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs.
Pitcher Allison Costa limited the Cougars to one run in five innings while striking out six.
Maxwell 8, Hayfork 0
Maxwell shut out Hayfork 8-0 Saturday morning to earn a spot in the championship game. Costa, the Panthers' junior pitcher, struck out five while picking up the victory.
Brittney Haywood went 3-for-3 at bat with a double and a triple, and Miller added three more hits, including two doubles.
Maxwell 11, Burney 1
Maxwell opened the tournament with an 11-1 victory against Burney on Friday.
Costa allowed one unearned run and struck out eight in five innings to pick up the win.
Shelen Boyes tripled and drove in two runs, and Powell tripled and drove in three. Jessie Otterson went 3-for-3 and scored two runs, and Costa added a double among her two hits.
