Area hoopsters shoot to all-league status

It was a basketball season that culminated with area high schools combining for one Northern Section championship, two state playoff wins and winning or sharing six league championships.

Now that the season has come to a close for everyone, the Northern Section is announcing the all-league boys and girls basketball teams from its respective leagues.

Four athletes from tri-county schools were also recognized as being their league's most valuable player, and Maxwell boys coach Forrest Bateman was selected as the Coach of the Year in the MVL.

Corning High junior Michael Shoemaker was named MVP or the Northern Athletic League after averaging 17.6 points and 11.6 rebounds per game in helping Corning go 28-3 on the season and 7-1 as league champions, and win the Division IV championship.

Orland High senior Jud Sailsbery was honored as the MVP of the Butte View League. Sailsbery set new school records for points in a season and in a career, and averaged 21.9 points per contest as the Trojans finished 25-6 and were the undefeated BVL champions at 8-0.

Maxwell High junior Zach Troughton is the Mid-Valley League MVP after averaging 13.9 points and 8.7 rebounds per game for the Panthers, who went 17-7 and topped the Mid-Valley League with a 9-1 mark.

From the Lady Panthers, junior Kaily McKinley scored 11 points and grabbed 9.9 rebounds per game to lead Maxwell to an overall record of 16-6 and the MVL championship at 9-1. She is the MVP of the Mid-Valley League as well.
