Gold Cup to overflow in Chico

New format adds excitement to sprint cars' biggest payday

Get your motors running, because the cream of the crop of sprint car drivers all hope to rise to the top in the 57th Annual Gold Cup Race of Champions, getting the green flag Sept. 9-11 at the Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico.

With a $50,000 prize awaiting the winner at the finish line, the race is the pinnacle event in the World of Outlaws racing series.

A new format is in place this year, in which all drivers will compete all three nights, with event points being earned on each of the first two nights determining the starting line-up for Saturday night's feature events.

Entering the week, reigning champion Joey Saldana, Steve Kinser and Jason Meyers were all separated by just 25 points before the Labor Day race at Grays Harbor Raceway in Washington.

Pit gates open at 2 p.m. with grandstand gates opening at 5 p.m. all three days. Time trials begin at 6:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday.

The pedals go down for Saturday's race at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets cost $40 Thursday and Friday, and $50 Saturday. Three-day tickets are available for $130.

For tickets, call 916-969-7484.
