Area athletes leave marks in record books
Colusa County diamonds littered with broken records
Colusa County was home to quite a few record setting high school seniors on the baseball and softball diamond this year.
Colusa High's Tiffany Friel finished her high school career with the Northern Section wins record (89), blowing past former Sutter High and current University of Oregon pitcher Jessica Moore (85).
Friel also passed Moore on the career strikeout list with 1,283 strikeout lists and ended up second all-time behind Hamilton High senior Emily Stokes (1,331).
Much like her pursuit of Moore's strikeout record, Friel passed former Foothill High and current UCLA player Samantha Camuso's section at-bats record of 395 by collecting 407 career at-bats only to finish in second to Sutter senior Courtney Gravel (414).
On the bigger diamond, Maxwell High set a plethora of individual and team section, state and national records.
The Panther's 11 no-hitters set a national record, besting the previous record of nine by Biloxi Notre Dame (Miss.) set in 1961.
The team's 18 shutouts is a California high school record.
Tyler Wells now holds the state record for doubles in a career (62) followed in second place by teammate Steven Perry (58).
Wells owns the state record for RBIs in a career (213) and in a season (78). His 35 consecutive wins and 34-0 record over his final three seasons are both state records for pitchers.
Perry scored the most runs in California history with 211 in his career. He threw seven consecutive shutouts, five no-hitters, four of them consecutive, and 24.1 consecutive no-hit innings, all state records.
Both Perry and Wells finished the seasons with a 0.00 ERA, which, of course, ties a national record.
James Bowen was hit by a pitch 32 times in his career which is likely a state record. Last year Bowen set state records by collecting 18 consecutive hits and reaching base 26 times in a row.
The trio combined for numerous section records while helping the team to a record-setting season.
The Panthers went 30-0, which is the best record in section history and so is the team's 46-game winning streak dating back to the end of the 2010 season. Maxwell's 78 doubles set a section team record.
In addition to the state records, which are also section records, Wells holds the section career records for wins with 37.
Perry has the career at-bats record (375) and hits (192). He set the season runs record (63) last season and has the most no-hitters and shutouts in a season.
Bowen collected more career triples (18), walks (70) and hit-by-pitches. He set season records last year in hits (61) and triples (9).
