CHSRA back in saddle in Cottonwood
Rodeo number six of the season is in the books for the riders and ropers of the California High School Rodeo Association (CHSRA) District 1, after the competition held Saturday and Sunday in Cottonwood.
Red Bluff's Chelsey Bushnell rode home with All-Around Cowgirl honors after a 120.5-point performance.
Reserve AA was Lily Bertelsen of Los Molinos (88.5) and 4th runner-up was Bailey Bean from Gerber (52.5).
Bushnell turned in the top time in pole bending at 44.25 seconds; finished second in breakaway roping (7.75); was part of the third-place duo in team roping - with Montague's Matthew Jesperson - (22.70); came in fourth in barrel racing (36.78); fifth in girls cutting (133 points) and was seventh in goat tying (20.53).
Cowgirls placing in the top-10 in their respective events included: Barrel racing - Michelle Woolbert, Gerber, 36.73 (2nd); girls cutting - Bertelsen, 144 (2nd), Cara Hencratt, Red Bluff, 138 (4th), Bean, 137 (5th); pole bending - Bertelsen, 48.19 (5th); goat tying - Bean and Bertelsen, 19.56 (5th-6th tie); breakaway roping - Bean, 3.07/1 (8th) and Hencratt, 4.06/1 (9th).
Jesse Brewer (Los Molinos) teamed with Corning's Wyatt Spencer to earn the top finish in team roping at 19.48 seconds. Bertelsen paired with Cottonwood's Bodie Robbins for second place (20.91) and Red Bluff's Wyatt Brown finished in eighth place with Bruston Minton from Witter Springs (18.14/1).
Brown was 3rd runner-up with 40 points for All-Around Cowboy, which ended in a tie between Colton Campbell (Klamath Falls) and Quincy Crum (Little Valley), both with 73 points.
Top-10 cowboy performances from tri-county entries were: Cutting - Chase Alvernaz, Williams, 143 (2nd) and Wyatt Brown, Red Bluff, 141 (3rd).
The next rodeo is the Challenge of Champions in Plymouth, March 22-24, where the top 3 in each event participate.
District 1 returns to action April 14-15 in Cottonwood.
