Colusa 4th, Williams 8th at Georgia Raczniak Tournament
Defense put Orland in the championship game of the 29th annual Georgia Raczniak Christmas Tournament on Saturday, and it was defense that won the title for the Trojans.
Orland pressured Durham into a pair of 5-second inbound turnovers in overtime, and Jose Huerta hit a free throw with 3.3 seconds left to give the Trojans a 46-45 victory.
Willows ran away from Colusa 81-41 to take second place, while Sutter got 18 points — 14 in the first half — from Isaiah Bohmann to lead the Huskies to the consolation victory. Wheatland salvaged a win by crushing Williams 84-48 for seventh place.
Willows 81, Colusa 41
The Honkers had too much quickness for the hobbled Redskins turning an 18=17 game after the first period into a rout by outscoring Colusa 67-17 over the next two periods — including a 41-point third quarter.
"That's what turned this game around; we put the quick guys in," Willows coach Darrell Schonauer said.
"We felt that we were going to be quicker than these guys," the coach added. "Then, when the shots started going, it's just contagious."
Willows was 19-for-34 from the floor during the two-period surge, and hit 6-of-10 from behind the arc. Forrest Johnson scored all 12 of his points in the run.
The Honkers' leading scorer was Ryan Welsh, who scored 17. Forrest Bateman added 15.
Colusa was without starting point guard Jeremy Hernandez, who injured an ankle on Friday. It forced Colusa coach Brady Myers to juggle the lineup.
"We had some players playing out of position," said Myers, adding that the lack of depth also showed up in the team's conditioning when Willows put on the afterburners.
Myers said he welcomes the holiday break to get his guys healthy and ready for league play.
"We are still trying to figure out who we are," the coach said.
Hayden Meyers led the way for Colusa with 12 points. Geoff MacPherson added 10 and Jacob Wright contributed eight.
Orland 58, Colusa 23
The Redskins were kept off the scoreboard in the fourth quarter Friday, and were led by eight points each from Meyers and Nick Allegrini.
Colusa 60, Williams 39
As reported in the Sun-Herald Saturday edition, MacPherson scored 15, Wright, 13, and Meyers, 10. Carlos Velazquez bagged 18 for Williams.
Wheatland 84, Williams 43
Despite 17 points from Velazquez and 15 more from Eric Sanchez, the Yellowjackets had no sting against Wheatland, who salvaged a win at the tournament for seventh place.
James Trujillo turned some heads with a 23-point effort for the Pirates, who also got 18 from Johnnie Millington and nine from Willie Maldonado.
Ten players scored for Wheatland, which led 41-16 at intermission, padded the lead to 65-40 after three quarters and cruised to the victory.
Colusa's Meyers and Williams' Velazquez each received All-Tournament nods.
